Using Alternative Medicine? Consider Alternative Medicine Health Insurance
When investigating alternative medicine health insurance, you should be on the look-out for three characteristics: the legitimacy of plans and practitioners, the efficacy of treatments and cost.
Legitimacy
Make sure your alternative health practitioner is properly licensed and has credentials. Do not take anything on hearsay: getting coverage from a practitioner not properly licensed or practicing outside the scope of his expertise can be very hazardous to your health. If you have significant cerebral condition and you end up using the services of chiropractic, can end up exacerbating your condition.
While regulation is in place to evaluate the licensing of most practitioners, be aware that some alternative treatments are not clinically recognized and there are no licensing or credential standards for some specialties. Always proceed with caution and be sure to check references and seek professional advice if in doubt. Also ensure your choice of provider is eligible for and carry medical malpractice coverage.
Efficacy
Most of the information on the success of alternative medicine is anecdotal in nature. People have the placebo-effect when it comes to alternative medicine: they feel they are receiving more attention and personalized treatment then they do in a conventional treatment setting, and some of the perceived success has more to do with emotions and inner feelings than factual medical condition.
In fact, clinical evidence is still scarce as to the long-term efficacy, tolerance and side effects of many alternative treatments. Most trials conducted are for two to four weeks and there is no research or evidence to back-up the longevity of these results.
If you are paying a lot of money for pharmaceutical drugs, then it is worthwhile to get coverage for effective alternative treatments.
Cost
Given that most "alternative" treatments involve two or more providers, costs could increase and the bottom-line could add up quickly.
One way to keep alternative coverage reasonable in cost is to reduce your total health care utilization. If your traditional practitioner successfully treats your condition, especially in its early stages, there is no need to make unnecessary visits to an alternative medical practitioner. In addition, if you get alternative treatment that is equally as effective as a conventional one, then it's better to go it the alternative way as this tends to cost less than most traditional medical treatments.
Still, it's a good idea to do a comparative cost research of your own before you jump on alternative coverage bandwagon. Some alternative treatments may save on your overall health care coverage costs, while others may increase them. It all depends on the treatment, and which area of the country you live in.
